As North Wales Crusaders U13s enter their mid-season break, they can look back on a satisfying first part of their debut campaign in the North West Counties League.
The team finished a highly-creditable second place in their division, as well as reaching the semi-final of their divisional cup.
With a number of the squad also attending development sessions at both Warrington Wolves and St Helens, the team have more than justified the faith put in them by the coaching staff of Allen Jones, Rikki Davies and newly-appointed Dan Hughes.
With a record of ten wins, one draw and three losses in their league campaign, the team now look forward to the play-offs in early September, when they will compete for a place in Division 3 for 2020.
“The boys have been tremendous to date,” head coach Jones said.
“They have been competitive in all games and, even in the losses, they have been right in the game and nobody has taken us to the cleaners so the boys can be very pleased with their efforts and performances”.
The team will continue to train through the summer break and possibly take on a friendly or two to make sure they are prepared for the play-offs.
“We will work hard through the summer break to improve the team’s skills and understanding of the game,” Jones added.
“Our most experienced players have less than 20 games under their belt so we still have much to do to make sure we can compete with some more than useful teams in the play-offs.”
Jones is quick to praise all who have contributed the team’s early success.
He said: “The whole squad have been fantastic, showing great commitment, determination, enthusiasm and no little skill.
“We are also very lucky to have a great, supportive set of parents who have been right behind us from the very beginning.
“Rikki has been on the coaching staff with us since day one and he has been an integral part of our progress and development.
“He is now developing his own style of coaching, which is great to see.
“Rikki has the potential to progress and develop into a very good coach as he gains more experience and we are very fortunate to have him within our group.
“We also really appreciate the ongoing support given to us by the senior team, directors, supporters and, in particular, chief executive Andy Moulsdale, who has been hugely enthusiastic in his support of the team.”
With two quality players joining the squad recently, plus the addition Hughes as part of the coaching staff, the team are very much looking forward to the play-offs and beyond.
The team are always on the look out for new players, regardless of any rugby playing experience.
