North Wales Crusaders have recruited hooker Callum Wood from Widnes Vikings ahead of the 2021 campaign.
The 21-year-old, who was on the books at Super League club Wigan Warriors as a youngster and has represented England Community Lions in the past, had a solitary season in the Championship with Rochdale Hornets in 2019.
After spending pre-season on trial with Widnes, the club handed Wood a contract for 2020 and he made two appearances for the Vikings before the campaign was cut short.
As the hooker became available ahead of 2021, North Wales head coach Anthony Murray has acted swiftly to add him to his squad.
On joining Crusaders, Wood said: “Andy Moulsdale gave me a call one night and he was asking what I had planned for next year.
“He was on about the culture at North Wales and it was interesting so it just went from there.
“It’s going to be good to get out there and play with the lads.
“We just need to rip into pre-season, hopefully make those play-offs and take it year-by-year from there.
“After speaking to Andy and Muzza, the play-offs are the goal, but it all starts with pre-season, everyone mucking in and taking it game-by-game.
“Everyone’s goal is to play week in, week out. It’s up to me to prove myself in training and get in that 17 every week.”
North Wales boss Murray added: “I’m delighted to have signed Callum for next season as it’s a solid piece of business for us.
“I spoke to Tim Sheens about Callum and he’s a player he rated very highly so that tells you all you need to know about him.
“He’s young and will give us more options at hooker so it’s a really positive deal for us to get done.
“I’m looking forward to working with Callum and seeing what he can bring to the club in 2021.”
