North Wales Crusaders A’s preparations for the 2019 campaign got underway last weekend as they lost 22-8 to Burtonwood Bridge in their pre-season opener at Deeside Leisure Centre.

Burtonwood, who are a league above Crusaders A in the North West Men’s League, put plenty of pressure on the home side’s line in the first-half, but the Welshmen stood up well and Connah Harding’s effort meant the scoreline was 4-4 at the break.

Although the visitors crossed for two tries early in the second-half and kept hold of their lead from there, Crusaders did grab a further try late on through Luca Owen-Youens.

Crusaders A head coach Mike Newton said: “The lads did myself and the club proud as the effort they put in was amazing.

“It was our first game together as a team and the defence in the first-half was great.

“We started to tire slightly in the second-half but, overall, it was a great performance.

“We get back to training on Wednesday and we’ll start preparing for the game next weekend.”

Crusaders A are now in their second season and will play the majority of their North West Men’s League Division Four fixtures at Deeside Leisure Centre in 2019.
