North Wales Crusaders’ loan signing Callum Hazzard is aware he’ll need to prove himself to the coaching staff before he claims a spot in the side.

The 20-year-old has signed from St Helens on a one-month loan, with his contract running month-by-month once the initial period is finished.

After signing a first-team deal with the Super League club in the off-season, Hazzard has linked up with North Wales to get his first taste of senior professional rugby league.

“I can’t wait to get playing,” Hazzard said. “I’m really looking forward to getting going with the lads.

“I’ve played in the reserves a lot for Saints, but this will be the first time I’ve played at senior level. It’s a great opportunity for me.

“I’m expecting it to be a lot more physical, but I’m looking forward to testing myself.

“I’m hoping I’ll be involved on Saturday against Coventry and can put in a decent display.

“I know a couple of the lads here like Warren Thompson and Dave Eccleston.

“Crusaders were one of the first clubs to come in for me so I was really keen to sign for them.

“It’s a well-run club and there’s a good set of lads here.”

Although Hazzard’s playing position is at loose forward and he offers plenty of size in the pack, he is skilful with the ball in hand and has the ability to kick goals.

“I want to show what I can do and hopefully grab a spot in the team,” he said.

“I know I won’t be going straight in and claiming a spot.

“I need to go in, show what I can do and take a shirt. I know it’s something I’m going to have to work for.”

Crusaders face Coventry Bears in their final pre-season friendly at Queensway Stadium at 1.30pm on Saturday, February 9. Entry is £12 for adults, £10 for concessions and £2 for U16s.
